Esau Selling His Birthright
Hendrick Terbrugghen (attr. to)
Dutch, 1588–1629
Oil on canvas

PROVENANCE: Private collection, Vienna; Julius Weitzner, New York and London; BJU, 1957.

Terbrugghen was the first of the Utrecht painters to journey to Rome and come under the influence of Caravaggio. When he returned to Holland, he brought the realism and lighting techniques of Caravaggio with Him.

The Old Testament story of Esau selling his birthright teaches the folly of sacrificing long-term benefits for immediate gratification. The founder of Bob Jones University stated the principle this way: “Don’t sacrifice the permanent on the altar of the immediate."
