Procession to Calvary
Giovanni Antonio Bazzi, called Il Sodoma
Dated 1525 on back of panel
Sienese, 1477–1549
Oil on panel

PROVENANCE: Cesare Viazzi, Genoa; Niccolo Castellino; Collection Nervi-Bartoli, Rome; Wildenstein Gallery, New York; BJU, 1965.

Most of Bazzi's artistic career centered in Siena. (The reddish-brown color, sienna, is named after this town in central Italy.) He was influenced by many Renaissance artists such as Leonardo, Signorelli, Perugino, and Raphael. Raphael's influence is readily seen by comparing his Procession in the Prado in Spain with Bazzi's treatment here. Bazzi bridged the art styles of the High Renaissance and Mannerism. Elements of Mannerism evident in his Procession include the twisted, contorted, and elongated forms, the garish colors, and the mixed perspectives.
