Master of Riofrío
Spanish, active c. 1500
Oil on panel

PROVENANCE: Cathedral at Cerezo de Riotirón; B. Pardo, 1960; BJU, 1960.

This unknown painter's style is characteristic of the Avila school in the late 15 th century, whose best painter was Riofrío's teacher, Pedro Berruguete. Berruguete introduced the technical and stylistic advancements of the Italian Renaissance into Spain. The Master of Riofrío helped to disseminate the new ideas with his art.

These paintings were designed to be predella panels in a large retable depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin. Swirling banderoles hold each prophet's name, and each man wears decorative jewels, an elaborate headpiece, and richly painted robes.
