The thought of bringing a child to visit an art collection may foster fearful thoughts—fear of boring your child and forever ruining his chance of appreciating art, fear of exposing your child to a realm you know little about yourself, or fear of entering an adult world too complicated for your child to understand. All of these fears are legitimate and common among parents and educators, but none of them will be realized at M&G. We have a competent staff of educators to design and lead children’s tours, and we thrive on inspiring those that attend. Often children develop an increasing interest in art as a result of coming, and we provide numerous educational materials to guide you as you continue the learning process in your classroom or home. We can easily adapt these tours for large classes, homeschoolers, and families. Enhance your child’s educational experience today and sign-up for a tour that will provide a thrill in learning.

Building Blocks of the Baroque

Castles and Cathedrals: People & Art of the Middle Ages
Children of all ages are enchanted by this mysterious time period; a time of castles with moats and towers, of knights and their charging steeds, of kings and queens, lords and ladies. On this exciting tour, the Dark Ages will be illuminated as children search the galleries for clues that teach about knights, scribes, sculptors, and other individuals of the time period. When clues are discovered, learning will continue with captivating activities about armor, coats of arms, and the symbols and qualities of Gothic art. (Ages: grades 1-6)

Once Upon a Time...in Holland
"Travel" across the ocean and back in time to "meet" the great artist Gerrad von Honthorst. Using their imaginations to leave behind the conveniences of modern times and step back into the late 1500's, children will learn of a young man who became an important Dutch artist. (Ages: grades 1-3)

Puzzle Pieces of Art
The pieces of a jigsaw puzzle are similar to the lines, colors, and shapes in a painting. When you put pieces of a puzzle together, you create a complete picture, just as an artist combines lines, colors, and shapes to compose a painting. Puzzle Pieces of Art explores the elements of art and teaches basic art appreciation. The hands-on activities and interactive discussions will keep each child interested and involved.
This tour is available for Grades 1-6.

Rebirth of the Classics: Renaissance Art
Travel back in time to the Renaissance era; immerse yourself in the theories, inventions, and art of that time period in a combined discussion and hands-on activity format. Children will learn how perspective was “invented” as well as how geometry and mathematics were used in painting.
This tour is available for Grades 3-8.

Taking a Ride on the Color Wheel
Children can explore the world of color on this interactive tour as they cook up fun with a Gallery color chef. Learning to mix ‘recipes’ and discovering the language of color is sure to open up a whole new world to children. Come learn about colors in our M&G paintings as well as the many colors that confront us daily. Each child will make his own discoveries using a "color bag" to see the world through new eyes.
This tour is available for Grades 1-3.
Currently unavailable.

Young Archaeologist’s Adventure
Children will enjoy “digging up” the numerous archaeological treasures contained in the Bowen Collection of Antiquities at M&G. Come design an Egyptian cartouche; create a timeline; sort through objects from Egyptian, Roman, and Hebrew cultures; and learn more about the everyday lives and customs of these ancient civilizations.
This tour is available for Grades 2-8.
