From ancient times to the present, portraits have immortalized and memorialized the famous and beloved. In the hands of a master portraitist, a king’s public persona can be artfully crafted, a child’s spirit intimately captured, or a donor’s contribution subtly acknowledged. Portraiture is a rich, nuanced interpretation of how we see ourselves, others, and the world around us. The Power of the Portrait showcases over 30 compelling portraits from the 15th through the 20th centuries and provides an interactive and engaging “window” into the multi-faceted world of portraiture—a view for the whole family to explore and enjoy.
The Children’s Learning Center
Artechus and Artemesia invite kids of all ages to explore The Power of the Portrait. Children
can play through history with ArtTrek, a new portraiture board
game. Simple guides and symbols charts help kids create their own realistic or symbolic portraits, while a variety of masks let kids “change faces” and try on
characters in stories of their own. Processes in puppet-making, educational Internet games and lessons, and a variety of books also encourage growing minds to think and stretch their imaginations.
Artechus and Artemesia guide children on a scavenger hunt through time and culture where children hone their observation skills by “people watching,” exploring what portraits reveal about human nature and divulge about people of the past.
