This webquest is designed for use by students in grades 6-8 as part of a cross-curricular unit incorporating art, history and language arts. The rubric can be modified for different age groups or different teacher requirements as needed.

South Carolina Visual Arts Standards Grades 6–8

Understanding the Visual Arts in Relation to History and Cultures

Students will

  1. Compare and contrast the characteristics of artworks from various cultures and historical periods.
  2. Compare and contrast a variety of artworks, artists, and visual arts materials that exist in South Carolina.
  3. Analyze, describe, and demonstrate how factors of time and place such as climate, resources, ideas, and technology influence visual characteristics that give meaning and value to a work of art.

Making Connections between Visual Arts and Other Disciplines

Students will

  1. Compare and contrast the characteristics of works in two or more art forms that have similar subject matter, historical periods, or cultural contexts.
  2. Compare and contrast concepts and subject matter found in the visual arts with those in other disciplines.
  3. Identify visual arts careers and the knowledge and skills required for specific art careers.

South Carolina Global Studies Standards Grade 8  

The student will demonstrate an understanding of the influence of the Western world in the spread of new ideas that took place from the Renaissance through the eighteenth century.

South Carolina English Language Arts Standards for Grades 6-8

Reading - The student will draw upon a variety of strategies to comprehend, interpret, analyze, and evaluate what he or she reads.

Writing - The student will write for different audiences and purposes.

Communication - The student will recognize, demonstrate, and analyze the qualities of effective communication.

Research - The student will access and use information from a variety of appropriately selected sources to extend his or her knowledge.
